Maid's Room
Integrated Quarters
The tight plan of the house did not allow for a separate servants' stair or wing, so Purcell ingeniously situated the maid's room on the northwest corner of the second floor, with access from the landing of the stairs between the first and second floors. Opening a door on the landing, the maid ascended six steps to her small (only nine by eleven feet) room. Despite its size, it was comfortable and in keeping with the decorative scheme of the rest of the house, with a closet, sink, stencils, and a view of the lake through art-glass windows. next stop > |
