System of Ornament
The success of Purcell and Elmslie's organic design scheme, with its "system of ornament," is immediately evident in the living room. The walls, echoing the color system of the exterior, have been restored to match the fireplace mural; now a salmon color, they originally were what Purcell called "rose chamois." Elmslie designed the organic-patterned stencils that wrap around the perimeter of this and every other room in the house. Warm, unstained oak trim runs horizontally around the room and frames the bookcases, the baseboards, and the frieze area below the stencils. Custom rugs with dark borders, now in reproduction form, are in muted pink and mauve colors that don't overpower the other decorative elements. next page >
