Children’s Features
In 1915, Purcell designed and built an ingenious Pullman-style bed on the morning-room side for four-year-old James. Two small windows at eye level enhance the illusion of riding in a sleeping car on a train. The wall of an adjoining closet acts as the headboard of the bed, while the footboard is a bookcase with a folding desk. A built-in chest of drawers beneath the bed provides additional storage space. Purcell envisioned the fireplace nook as the boys' corner, where they could have a snack and enjoy being read to on winter evenings. next page >
