Joan and David grapple with the question of how to best access the middle and upper regions of the painting. Some of their options include installing scaffolding, using a scissors lift, or flipping the painting and working on it upside down.

Up, Up, and Away
A scissors lift is brought in. It will allow the conservators to maintain a comfortable position while working on the picture. In order to have the necessary control over their brush, the conservators need to be close enough to the canvas to support their hands. Working from a ladder or from scaffolding would make this very difficult to achieve. The lift will be an invaluable tool during the final phase of inpainting.

The weekends continue to draw large crowds of visitors to the Restoration gallery.

The exhibition is extended for an additional week to allow conservators to finish the task of inpainting.

Inpainting continues as the conservators work their way to the top of the painting.
