Early in their history, Larsen created fabrics intended to be used for clothing. At first this work was done on a commission basis, and ranged from individual shawls to suiting fabric ordered by tailors. The first large production order came from Casualaire, a men's store in New York, who requested 700 ties for the Christmas season in the mid-1950s.

In the late 1950s JL Arbiter was formed, a small subsidiary company which created both fabric and a clothing line that was sold at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. The Ja eL fabric line was developed in the 1960s and featured a group of printed jersey fabrics used for both clothing and interiors.
