Art Stories: Spirit Photography with Nathan Lewis

Thursday, October 25, 2012
7 – 8 p.m.

Pillsbury Auditorium

Photographer Nathan Lewis is fascinated by Spirit Photography, an art form developed by late 19th-century artists and hucksters who used the new technology of photography to capture images of the paranormal world; or so they claimed. In the last decade, Lewis spent time with the Twin Cities Paranormal Society, resulting in the series "Conversations in the Dark," which documents and interprets peoples' claims of contact with spirits, poltergeists, and all things supernatural. In this conversation, Lewis will discuss his interest in historical spirit photography, describe his experiences with the Paranormal Society, and meditate on the intersection of technology and human feelings of loss, horror, and discovery.

Lewis received his BFA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin, and his MFA in Photography from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

$10; $5 for MIA members. To reserve tickets, call (612) 870-6323 or reserve tickets online »
