Buffalo Horn Artforms: An Exploration in Contemporary Lakota Expression

Thursday, September 27, 2012
7 – 8 p.m.

Wells Fargo Community Room

Lecturer: Kevin Pourier

Buffalo are important to the daily lives of Lakota traditionalists, the Pte Oyate kin (Buffalo People). One of few living artists who work with buffalo horn, Kevin Pourier played a critical role in reviving this nearly lost tradition. Pourier will describe his work with the precious material, discuss the importance of buffalo horn in historic Lakota life, and explain how these historic objects inspire his sculptures. Featuring outstanding examples of the artist's work, this hands-on presentation will allow participants to engage with these beautiful, meaningful objects.

Pourier, an Oglala Lakota, is an award-winning artist who lives and works on the Pine Ridge Reservation, located at the northern edge of the Badlands. He received the 2012 Best in Classification for Diverse Art at the Sante Fe Indian Market. His art can be found in many collections, including the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, and the MIA.

$10; $5 for MIA members. Free to members of the Native American Art Affinity Group.
