Bar Codes (but No Scanner!): Potmarks and What They Tell Us about Late Bronze-Age Business

Lecturer: Nicolle Hirschfeld, PhD

Greek and Roman trade amphorae were marked with stamps to claim ownership, to label contents, weight, quality, price, or date. Hear the latest research about these potmarks and what they can tell us about the organization of trade and industry in the Late Bronze-Age Mediterranean.

Hirschfeld works in the Department of Classical Studies at Trinity University, and is also a research associate with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. She holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (PhD), Texas A&M University (MA), and Bryn Mawr College (BA).

Hirschfeld has received numerous awards for her work, has published widely, and is the AIA's Kershaw Lecturer for 2012/2013.

Co-presented with the Archaeological Institute of America and its local chapter.
