By Robert Jacobsen, curator of Chinese, Indian, and Southeast Asian art, and chair of Asian Art

Robert Jacobsen will present an illustrated lecture focused on a famous masterpiece of ancient Chinese bronze casting from the Pillsbury collection. This talk is presented in conjunction with the special exhibition, "The Louvre and the Masterpiece," on view through January 10, 2010. After establishing the criteria for judging masterpiece quality, Jacobsen will apply them to a variety of Chinese works from the museum's world-renowned collection of Chinese art.

Presented by the Asian Art Curatorial Council.

The night sky is an awe-inspiring view that has intrigued scientists and artists for centuries. At Target Family Day, discover the constellations on 17th-century night-sky maps and hear mythical tales that gave the constellations their names. Take a virtual nature walk from the earth to the edge of the cosmos with the Minnesota Planetarium Society. Create your own night-sky map in a hands-on studio. Make a spectroscope and learn how this tool helps astronomers understand the stars. Hear beautiful music from the age of Vermeer. And don't miss Vermeer's masterpiece, The Astronomer, on its maiden voyage to North America in the exhibition, "The Louvre and the Masterpiece."
