What makes a work of art a masterpiece? What qualities of the work itself, and the conditions of its making, contribute to its distinction? In this workshop, we'll study historically significant works of art from a variety of cultures. Drawing activities will focus on highlights of the museum's permanent collection.

Experienced and novice sketchers are welcome. You'll get the basics in our weekly workshops, led by artists who offer plenty of individual instruction. Sessions begin with a short lecture, discussion, and slide show to highlight specific technical, historical, and stylistic issues. Then you'll move into the galleries to draw from artworks in the MIA's permanent collection and select special exhibitions. Please request a materials list.

Sketching in the Galleries: Color Expression

Artist Georgia O'Keeffe said, "I found I could say things with color that I couldn't say in any other way." In this workshop, we'll explore color as an agent of expression. Presentations will illustrate various historical approaches to color. In the galleries, students will work freely with color, discovering its wide-ranging potential.

French Art 1750-1850

Beginning with the French Revolution of 1789, Paris was the scene of a series of artistic revolutions that led to modern art. After a backward glance at the Ancien Regime, this class will explore the social, political, and aesthetic ideas of the neoclassical movement as shaped by its leader, Jacques-Louis David. The romantic spirit is explored through the works of Theodore Gericault and Eugene Delacroix. The rise of Realism is traced through the July Monarchy (1830-1848), with a look at developments in the art of the Salon as well as the politically conscious work of the Barbizon school. Works by artists such as Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier, and Felix Nadar will illustrate the impact of a burgeoning popular culture and developments in photography.

Instructor Julie L'Enfant is an associate professor art history and chair of liberal arts at the College of Visual Arts, St. Paul.

What Makes a Classical Masterpiece?

Two thousand years ago, Greek and Roman writers were already compiling lists of great works of art, including the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This class will explore what early Greeks and Romans considered the critical ingredients of a masterpiece and what survives from the works they admired. The class will look at some of the highlights of the major antiquities collections in Paris, New York, London, Berlin, Munich, Rome, and Athens.

Lecturer Mark Stansbury O'Donnell is a professor of art history at the University of St. Thomas.

Japanese Woodblock Prints and Popular Culture

Since they first captured the imaginations of Europeans in the 19th century, Japanese prints have been treasured by Western collectors. Prints picturing the "Floating World," or ukiyo-e, were an integral part of popular culture in Japan and functioned as illustrations, advertisements, and souvenirs.

This course will examine the development of both style and subject matter in Japanese prints within the socio-economic context of the 17th-19th centuries.

Instructor Kathleen Ryor is a professor and chair of the art history department at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota.
