Time and Tide: The Changing Art of the Asmat of New Guinea

Saturday, February 14, 2009—Sunday, July 26, 2009
U.S. Bank Gallery
Free Exhibition

Discover the distinctive aesthetic sense of the Asmat people of western New Guinea. Asmat art frequently employs abstract, curvilinear designs in exhilarating combinations, giving a powerful expression to Asmat spiritual traditions and worldviews. The exhibition consists of objects made by Asmat artists, primarily from the collection of the American Museum of Asmat Art (AMAA) at the University of St. Thomas.

This exhibition is organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in collaboration with the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota (AMAA @ UST).

The exhibition and catalogue have been supported by a generous gift from Anne Larsen Simonson.
