Celebrating Art
The culmination of a major renovation and expansion effort, the re-imagined MIA includes a new wing designed by Michael Graves & Associates, thirty-four new galleries, and an additional 40% exhibition space. Beyond the galleries, the expansion allows for increased accessibility to key educational programs for collectors, connoisseurs, and the public, through a new Lecture Hall, Photographs Study Room, an expanded Print Study Room, and an Art Research Library in a new, more visible location. Inside and out, the Graves design respectfully combines the neoclassical elegance of the MIA's original McKim, Mead & White 1915 building with the stark minimalism of Kenzo Tange's 1974 addition.
Downloadable Audio Tour
MIA Director and President Bill Griswold hosts this personal tour of the new wing. Download the tour, put it on your portable audio player, print out the map, and set out for the museum. You’ll be richly rewarded as Bill walks you through the Target Wing—floor by floor—pointing out highlights and providing details and insights along the way. What's New
Interactive Directories & Learning Stations
You'll also find more way-finding and learning resources to add to your visit. Fifteen Interactive Directories are located throughout the museum—and Interactive Learning Stations complement many of the galleries with in-depth information about the permanent collection. A growing number of small video screens help enhance and interpret specific works of art. New stations include a Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program archive and projects dedicated to the MIA's works on paper—Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Grand Opening Celebration
A gala celebration was held the weekend of June 10-11 2006. Thousands of people gathered at the MIA to enjoy world-class art, music, food, dancing, and more. Photo highlights coming soon! |
