The Rock-Tenn paper recycling plant and the American Iron metal scrap yard inspire metaphoric associations with life and death, growth and decay, order and entropy, structure and chaos. For the MAEP show, Kareken is creating these paintings on a grand scale, as wall-size vistas. The MAEP is an artist-managed curatorial department of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts devoted to the exhibition of works by artists who live in Minnesota. The Program was conceived in 1975 by regional artists in response to their desire for professional exhibition space, recognition, and critical dialogue. Since that time, the program has been fundamentally committed to the perceptions and evaluations of artists; and has produced and presented over 150 exhibitions of contemporary art. The MAEP's objectives are to exhibit Minnesota artists' work on a regular basis; to foster the exchange of ideas among artists; to stimulate interaction of ideas among artists, the museums, and the public; and to facilitate the creation and presentation of work in a context that is not inhibited by aesthetic fashion or commercial demand. The Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program is supported in part by a generous grant from the Jerome Foundation. How MAEP Works
The MAEP is an artist controlled exhibition program. Its exhibitions are selected by a panel of artists who are elected by and from their peers at an annual meeting of the artist community held each fall at the MIA. You will find information about the artist panel here as well as information on how to submit a proposal to the panel. MAEP Social Media
Choose the way you want to receive all the latest MAEP news. MAEPedia
Documenting over 150 exhibitions, the MAEPedia gives access to photos, essays, critical reviews, audio and video. Wikis, by nature, are ever growing and changing entities, and new information will be added on a regular basis. Visitors are encouraged to add comments and insights regarding shows past and present. This format embodies the same democratic spirit as the MAEP program, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute to this rich historical record. visit the MAEPedia » MAEP E-Newsletter preview »
